Sub-head 97. Public Health and Buildings Ordinance: Compensation and Resumptions $100,000.-This vote is required for the acquisition of buildings and land which impede the Town Planning lay-out scheme for Kowloon and which prevent the re-alignment and widening of streets. The Vote for 1928 proved to be quite inadequate.

BUILDINGS.

Sub-head 98. Sham Shui Po Market Extension $3.000.-This vote provides only for

payment of retention money. The work will be completed in 1928.

99. Sai Yu Shek Cemetery: Quarters for Sextons: $500.—This vote provides only for payment of retention money. The work will be completed in 1928.

100. Latrine and Bath House. Boundary Street, Shamshuipo $5,000-This vote provides only for payment of retention money. The work will be completed in 1928.

101. Kowloon City Market Extension $15,000.-To extend market accommo- dation at Kowloon City which is at present inadequate. This work is asked for by the Sanitary Department.

102. Temporary Market at Kowloon Tong $1,500.-Considered essential by the Sanitary Department to meet the requirements of the Kowloon Tong deve- lopment.

103. Latrine at Kowloon City $20,000.-Essential to serve a populous and

rapidly developing district.

104. Married Quarters at Lai Chi Kok Prison $67,000.-These are considered

very desirable by the Superintendent of Prisons.

GENERAL WORKS.

105. Roads $50,000.-To provide for areas in course of development. Roads are macadamized kerbed and channelled and footpaths laid as new build- ings are erected during the year,

106. Drainage:(a) Training nullahs $10,000. To provide for cutting trenches to prevent breeding pools for mosquitos and permanent nullah channels through swamps as development proceeds.

107. (b) Miscellaneous Drainage Works $30,000. This vote is required to provide for drainage works of a small nature, 'connections to sewers and to stormwater drains and to provide generally for the drainage of the areas in New Kowloon which are being rapidly developed for building purposes.

108. Micellaneous $10,000.-To provide for miscellaneous works such as small latrines, temporary markets, sinall stores, alterations to buildings leased by Government, electrical fittings not otherwise provided for and many small items asked for by various Departments from time to time which are neces- sary but for which no specific provision has been made.

Sub-head 109. Water Works $4,000.-To provide for areas in course of development,

repairs to catchwaters and paths across catchment areas, etc.

110. Port Works $1,000.—To provide for small works and to cover cost of in-

vestigations involving soundings and borings for proposed works.

COMMUNICATIONS.

111. Waterloo Road Extension to foothills $8,000.--To complete a further

section of this road to meet the needs of increased traffic.

112. Extension of Roads-Kowloon Tong Development-area at Kowloon Tsai $20,000.-This is necessary for the construction of certain roads which Government has undertaken to form on this Estate.

113. Widening of Nathan Road northward to Nan Cheong Street $20,000.- This is required to extend Nathan Road and to meet the needs of ever increasing traffic, portions of present road are only 30 feet wide at present.

114. Access Road to Christian Chinese Cemetery Kowloon City $9,700.-This is necessary in order to provide access to the Cemetery as promised by Government, and to enable this Cemetery to be more readily used.

115. Improving existing main roads for motor traffic from Prince Edward and Argyle Streets Extension $20,000. This is necessary to provide a proper foundation to this very important thoroughfare in order to make it capable of carrying heavy and fast moving traffic.

DRAINAGE.

116. Kowloon Tong Development Area-connection of stream north of hill to main nullah $21,000.-It is anticipated that this will complete the work of training the streams to the north of the site.

117. Kowloon Tong Development: Central connecting Stream, East side of Estate to Main Nullah $16,000.-To prevent silting and to protect areas which have recently been filled in.

MISCELLANEOUS.

118. Surfacing Roads and Scavenging Lanes at Kowloon Tong $30,000. This is necessary for the surfacing of roads and scavenging lanes which has to be undertaken by Government.

119. Refuse Dump at Cheung Sha Wan $5,000.-This provides for the cover- ing over of refuse dumped on the foreshore at Cheung Sha Wan and is essential from the sanitary point of view.

120, Chinese Cemeteries-Laying out new areas $6,000.-This is in the nature of a recurrent vote. Owing to the increase in population it is necessary to open up new areas for burials. Every effort is made to economize space but new land has to be laid out as occasion requires.

121. Kowloon Tong Development Scheme: Excavation and Filling $4,000.—- It is estimated that this will complete the formation of this Estate which Government has undertaken.

122. Filling in areas at Tong Mi and Kowloon Tong $35,000.-This is required to fill in certain low lying areas which is essential for the proper drainage of this area.

123. Pier at Lai Chi Kok $4,000.-This is required to provide a permanent pier in place of the existing temporary structure which is continually in need of repair.
